You Just Had to be There!!!

Posted on October 3, 2018 by Laureen2014

Some experiences are indescribable to others.  You just had to be there!  I usually hear this when people talk about the Grand Canyon or other natural wonders.   We had this experience right here on Honeymoon Island, our favorite, local beach.  It was a beautiful Sunday morning, low tide and it was manatee mating season.

Manatees are protected under Federal law.  Please don’t touch them like the disrespectful people did on this day.  Why do people think it’s alright to touch a wild animal? I wonder.  I think I hear me saying, “Don’t touch them!”  You know I can’t keep my mouth shut.  See me at the end on the left backing up.

The manatee is protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, which makes it illegal to harass, hunt, capture or kill any marine mammal. The manatee is also protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978, which states: “It is unlawful for any person, at any time, intentionally or negligently, to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb any manatee.”
