Another Moth Sighting

Posted on July 17, 2019 by Laureen2014

This time it was Layla who spotted this large, beautiful moth.  If it wasn’t for Layla and her curiosity, we wouldn’t have seen it.  This male Polyphemus moth was hiding under a red pickup truck parked at the gas station where we stopped to buy gas.  What a sight!

Polyphemus moths are one of the largest silk moths.  It is named after Polyphemus, the giant one-eyed cyclops in Greek mythology, because of its large eyes on its hindwings.  You can’t see the eyes on this moth.  They’re hiding from us.  Why?

Moth sightings have different meanings.  This is my second moth sighting this summer.  Both were on the way to Brevard and in Brevard.  For me, it’s about the delicacy of life and a reminder to live intentionally everyday.  I want to pay attention to the details and spend more time on what’s most important to me.  Moths have a very short life span as do we.

I think it’s a male marked by large antennae.
