Luna Day & Blue Ghost Night, oh my!

It just doesn’t happen.  Apparently it does in Brevard.  It happened this past Sunday, June 2, 2019, the day before my 30th wedding anniversary and 2 days before my Dad’s day of passing.

Sean and I were on our morning walk to the Brevard Music Center.  We spoke to a nice lady who was admiring what she called a butterfly.  Sean said it was a moth, and I believed him.  As it turns out, my sweet 9 year old niece saw our picture and said “It’s a Luna moth.”  How interesting!  Samantha’s cat is named Luna.  But, there’s more.

Luna moths are very special, somewhat endangered, and rarely seen by people.  That’s because they only live for one week.  This moth was a female.  Her sole purpose is to reproduce, give life, and then pass on.  Luna moths are symbolic for rebirth, new beginnings and ultimate love…all qualities that Sean and I share together.

To top off our perfect day, that night, we trekked through the very dark Pisgah forest to find the Blue Ghosts of Western NC.  My sister made me do it.  I love her for that, amongst many other reasons.  A challenging walk through unknown paths filled with unknown critters.  EEEEKK!  I kept very focused, breathed deeply, and put my trust in my family.  I held on tight, walked across a little bridge, lifted my feet over roots, and there they were.  It was magical!  You could see bright, but soft and subdued lights floating in the distance.  Try to close your eyes and picture souls at night.  Peace.

My brother outfitted me with this cool headgear,  but I couldn’t use them. Too bright for the blue ghosts.  I was disappointed, but determined to experience the blue ghosts.  Such a fashion statement though.  Love them.

This day ranked pretty high on the amazing scale.

Take the time to explore and look around you.  I hope that you can see what we saw!

How very special – Kimberley had mentioned the blue ghosts in a post on FB last week – I have seen lightning bugs by the 100s but never a bug that stays lit continuously. I have put them on my list of things to see. I have seen many a luna moth but never knew of their symbolism or any of the lore you talked about. I’ll be more thoughtful next time. I am looking forward so much to our time together in Dunedin – y’all are so special to me. Much love.
